LONDON | Tue Jun 26, 2012
(Reuters) - The Spice Girls reunited for a few hours on Tuesday to launch a new musical based on songs that made them one of the biggest bands of the 1990s, but there was time for plenty of laughs, avowals of mutual love and even the odd catty aside.
"Viva Forever!", written by British comedian Jennifer Saunders and produced by "Mamma Mia!" mastermind Judy Craymer, opens at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End on December 11.
Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell -- or to use their more familiar monikers Posh, Scary, Baby, Sporty and  Ginger Spice -- were back together 12 years after they split and seven years since their reunion tour.
Any appearance by all five Spice Girls is a major media event in Britain, where they introduced the concept of "girl power" and were hailed as modern-day feminists by some and "sugar-pop" pin-up girls by others.
Tabloids delighted in unearthing behind-the-scenes tensions and tantrums between the members when they were a major force in pop, but, for the most part, Tuesday's appearance was harmonious.
"I don't think it took (us) any convincing at all," Chisholm told a small group of reporters who met the band members before they appeared on stage to present the musical.
"It's something we've spoken about a lot over the years. I think that our music lends itself really well to theatre and when we reunited in 2007 that was when we started to talk about it more seriously."
Beckham, in a black outfit made by her own fashion brand, added: "We always said if we do this we want to work with the best people, because that's what we've always done. Everything we've done we've done properly and we've got the 'A-team.'"
HANDS OFF APPROACH
The Spice Girls' level of involvement in the musical was not fully clear, although they were consulted on the storyline and have seen early workshops.
"As much as we've written the songs, we also didn't want to creatively stifle Judy and Jennifer," Beckham said.
"So, somewhat, we have let them do what they do. Their success speaks for themselves. We really gave them the freedom to do their thing. We had a lot of faith in them."
Beckham, who has remained in the limelight since the band went into hiatus in 2000 due to her success as a designer and style icon and marriage to soccer star David Beckham, hoped Viva Forever! would bring girl power to a new audience.
"We talked about girl power for a long long time and we're hoping to introduce a whole new generation. What we do individually as well is empower women and it's fun - we want to have fun and we're excited."

Viva Forever! is not a re-telling of the Spice Girls' meteoric rise to global fame after they formed in 1994 having answered an advertisement to form a girl band.

While it does feature their hits, which include "Wannabe", "Spice Up Your Life" and "Viva Forever", it centers around four characters who audition for a TV talent show.
"It's not about actually us, it's the essence of the Spice Girls," said Halliwell, who, like the other four Spice Girls, is a mother in her late 30s.
"There is a talent show in there, but actually, really what it's about is about friendship, it's about motherhood and then there is a little bit of how do you juggle between success and friendship?"
Asked about how they had got along since coming together to promote and work on the musical, Halliwell replied: "We actually do have quite a good time together when it's just us lot."
Dinner was out of the question, however, as Beckham was leaving on a flight soon after the promotion.
Brown bantered with reporters, calling their questions "crap" and asking why no one had asked why they all looked so good. She also stated on stage that at the musical workshops the performers "sing it better than us."
"Well, that's not hard," Chisholm replied to loud laughter.
Chisholm also interrupted Halliwell as she praised the other Spice Girls, referring jokingly to "Ginger Spice's" shock 1998 exit from the group amid reports of a bust up.
"She's only saying that because she left."
Reunited... and it feels so good: Spice Girls are back together as they unveil details of new West End musical
Viva Forever! The Musical set to open at the Piccadilly Theatre on December 11 Will tell the story of a wannabe singer and her best friends trying to find fame through a reality show

It's been four years since they reunited for their Return Of The Spice Girls tour.
And following months of speculation whether or not they would join forces again, all five members of the Spice Girls got together in London today to announce details of a West End musical based on their songs.
Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown and Geri Halliwell went back to where it all began - the St Pancras Hotel in London, where they filmed their Wannabe video in 1996.

Just like the hotel, which has since been restored and is looking a lot better these days, few would disagree the girl group are also looking much improved from their '90s heyday.
The musical, entitled Viva Forever!, will tell the story of 'a beautiful, talented girl and her best friends who get swept up in the obsession of today's TV celebrity culture'.
The musical 'charts her journey into the world of overnight fame and its impact on her relationships with her mother and the friends she thought she'd have forever'.
Victoria, arguably the most successful financially since leaving the group, flew in specially from Los Angeles.
Not a tracksuit or platform trainer in sight: The five-piece are fortunately a lot more sophisticated these days
Looking more military than 'Posh', the mother-of-four, 38, wore a black dress and peep-toe knee-high boots.
However, while her former bandmates had wide smiles, Victoria kept her usual stony-faced demeanour.
Mel B, 37, who looked far from 'Scary' in a grey shift dress and spiked Christian Louboutin heels, had flown in from her new home in Australia via LA.
Geri, 39, and Emma, 36, were going for girlie looks in short dress and killer heels, with the ex-Ginger Spice appearing to be wearing the same Jimmy Choo strappy sandals worn by the Duchess of Cambridge recently, albeit in gold instead of silver.

Mel C, 38, appeared to have left her Sporty Spice persona firmly in the past with a floaty white Ane maxi dress, which has also been worn by Karen Gillan and Kylie Minogue.
The five women had joined forces to announce details of Viva Forever, a musical based on their songs and written by comedienne Jennifer Saunders and producer by Judy Craymer, the theatrical impresario behind the success of Mamma Mia!
Speaking at the press conference, Craymer hailed the group: 'I loved what the Spice Girls did for women's confidence. There's something very empowering about them.'
Saunders, who cameoed in their film Spice World, said: 'The second I knew this project was up for grabs I rang my agent and said I had to be involved.'

Viva Forever! is the latest 'jukebox musical' to hit the West End - that use original songs as a basis for an original storyline.
While Mamma Mia! (Abba), Thriller Live (Michael Jackson) and We Will Rock You  (Queen), have been a huge success, other musicals such as Our House (Madness) have not been as popular.
In the run-up to today's announcement, all five Spice Girls have been hinting on their respective Twitter pages.

While not directly addressing the Spice Girls reunion speculation, Beckham said this year: 'I was never going to be the best singer and it wasn’t my passion.'
The group's reunion today comes four years after their sell-out Return Of The Spice Girls world tour, which ended prematurely after they cancelled the gigs in South America, South Africa and Asia.
During their four years in the charts, they enjoyed nine No.1 singles and two No.1 albums in the UK, including one No.1 single and album in the U.S.
The musical is due to open at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End on December 11.

Despite the tantrums it’s taken to bring all five of them together, it will be broad — if rigid — smiles all round at today’s press conference to announce the Spice Girls’ new stage musical, Viva Forever!
At the event, the producer Judy Craymer, who brought Mamma Mia! to the stage, will confirm the show will open before Christmas at the Piccadilly Theatre, London.
And, after protracted negotiations, she will be joined by the five girls themselves — Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Emma Bunton, Mel C and Geri Halliwell. Jennifer Saunders, who wrote the script for the musical will be there, too.
Early days: Each member of the group, pictured in 1996, was given their own nickname - from left to right - 'Sporty' Mel C, 'Ginger' Geri Halliwell, 'Baby' Emma Bunton, 'Scary' Mel B and 'Posh' Victoria Beckham

But it is a singular irony that the ‘Girl Power’ musical has done little to bring the five Spice Girls together. They may have once sung: ‘Friendship never ends’ but the association between them remains uneasy as the women approach their 40th birthdays.
They have agreed — under a three-line whip from former manager Simon Fuller — that they will appear together for today’s press conference and be in the same room together on opening night.
But that is absolutely it. They won’t give joint interviews to a forthcoming ITV documentary tracing their lives from the early Spice Girls days. And they certainly won’t sing together or reunite as a band.
Indeed, Mel C and Mel B took to Twitter to express their disappointment at not being involved in the Diamond Jubilee concert earlier this month.

Mel C said: ‘Bit miffed I’m not down at Buckingham Palace’; while Mel B tweeted, ‘Makes me sooo sad spice girls wasn’t part of the queens jubilee, break my heart big time, i was so up for it, watched some of it on tv, amazing!’
But it wasn’t for lack of asking that the Spice Girls weren’t on stage that night. The group had been approached. Mel B, Mel C, Geri and Emma Bunton were all available. However, Victoria Beckham told one newspaper that they were all too busy with ‘lots on our plates’.
In truth, the only person who was ‘too busy’ was Mrs Beckham herself. She and her husband, David, remain Simon Fuller’s biggest clients. They are so close that she even uses his offices as a base for UK meetings of her fashion label, and she regularly parks her daughter, Harper, in his office with a nanny and bodyguard while she works.

Victoria, 38, who has made a success of her second career as a fashion designer, has no interest in revisiting her first as a singer.
In a recent interview, she conceded that she hadn’t been any great shakes as a pop star and found the whole episode rather an embarrassment.

‘I enjoy what I’m doing now so much more,’ she said. ‘Being in the Spice Girls was fantastic, but I was never going to be the best singer and it wasn’t my passion.’
As you might imagine, this may put Fuller in a tricky position from time to time as he also represents the other Spice Girls. This, perhaps, led to the snarky comments from the rest of the group who would have liked to take another bow — if only Victoria had consented to join them.
Eighteen years after the girls were first brought together, fierce feuds divide the group. The principal battle-line is the one drawn between Victoria and Mel B, 37 — although there have been several spectacular fallings-out in recent years between Geri and Mel C, who objected to Geri’s attitude during their ill-fated reunion in 2007, and another between Geri and Victoria, fuelled apparently by jealousy.
Friends of Mel B say she and Victoria haven’t spoken in two years — and it would take a miracle for them to reconcile.
The origins of the latest feud are petty. The pair apparently fell out when Victoria declined to lend Mel a dress from her collection to wear on her reality show in the U.S.
This may have been wise as the show, Mel B: It’s A Scary World, fell far short of the upscale image of the Victoria Beckham brand.
Mel tried to get her solo career off the ground amid heavily staged bickering with second husband Stephen Belafonte. Her daughter by first husband Jimmy Gulzar and Angel, a love-child by Hollywood actor Eddie Murphy, looked on.
Mel B and Victoria pointedly send tweets to the rest of the band without including each other. And the divisions do not end there.

Viva Forever! has unleashed a fresh wave of discontent and in-fighting. The five girls have been consulted about the show, which will use the band’s greatest hits as a backing track to an original storyline.
The musical will tell the story of a young woman, Viva, who appears on a reality talent contest. She’s then put together with four other girls in a manufactured band, who go on to enjoy global success — but at the price of broken friendships.
‘The show isn’t about the Spice Girls directly, but it is sprinkled with their essence,’ says producer Judy Craymer.
It will include the songs Wannabe, Who Do You Think You Are? and Mama — all number ones during the Spice Girls’ heyday.

The deal to bring the show to the stage was struck with Simon Fuller in late 2009. Negotiations, however, have been protracted.
One report in the U.S. suggested: ‘Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm can’t agree on anything. It’s driving Jennifer Saunders crazy.’
A spokesman for the show denied that there had been conflict, but did concede that the girls had very different levels of involvement.
Mel C, 37, Emma, 36, and 39-year-old Geri have been to meetings in London as the show has been slowly put together over the past few years. Mel B and Victoria, who both live abroad, have had far less input.
A spokesman for the show insists: ‘The girls are tremendously supportive of it. Judy has kept everyone up to date with what is going on, and no one has put their foot down about anything.’

In an interview, Jennifer Saunders said: ‘Before I started writing, I chatted to Emma and Mel C together because they live in London. I later talked to Geri, while Judy spoke to Mel B and Victoria.
‘Geri was the one who wanted to know most about how the girls in the fictional group got on. What was lovely was explaining which song went where, and then they’d share memories of what happened when they recorded the individual songs.

‘They have real affection for each other, and it’s also clear this was a very special time of their lives.’
Her comments ring hollow, however, when you know that each interview had to be conducted separately.
For, as was proved by the Spice Girls’ comeback tour in 2007, these are women who have moved in very different directions.
Indeed the much-publicised tour was such a miserable experience that it was cut short — ending in February 2008 before planned dates in Sydney, Beijing, Cape Town and Buenos Aires.
The band had barely spent any time together since breaking up in 2000 and some of them — particularly Mel C — didn’t want the reunion in the first place.
The band were originally put together following a 1994 advertisement in The Stage newspaper. ‘R U 18-23 with the ability to sing/dance? R U streetwise, ambitious, outgoing and determined?’ it asked.
The five that were eventually settled on were given aliases Ginger (Geri), Baby (Emma Bunton), Sporty (Mel C), Scary (Mel B) and Posh (Victoria Beckham), and had a period of false starts before being signed by Virgin record label.
In 1996, Wannabe — their debut single — was a global smash that went to number one in 31 countries. It was followed by another eight number one singles, as well as a semi-fictional film and numerous worldwide tours.
Together with a series of huge marketing tie-ups — with the likes of Pepsi, Cadbury’s and PlayStation — they became the best-selling female group of all time.
Trouble, however, soon emerged, and the group’s original split was acrimonious.  Geri had left after a huge row with Mel B in 1998, the year that both Victoria and Mel B were pregnant with their first babies.

Their third album, recorded after Victoria’s wedding in 1999, sold only a fraction as well as their previous ones. In December 2000, they each agreed to concentrate on solo careers.
Mel C strongly resisted the reunion tour. She had suffered depression after the split and developed an eating disorder.
She agreed only when she was told that it would go ahead with or without her. Afterwards, she said she only joined so she couldn’t be painted as the villain.

However, she was worried that she might throw away the credibility she had fought hard to gain as a solo artist. Her first solo album, Northern Star, sold an impressive four million copies.
During the tour, there were clashes between Mel C and Geri, with Mel apparently finding Geri deeply irritating. Geri was late several times to rehearsals and insisted on halting proceedings to meditate.
To complicate matters, all of them were by that point mothers, apart from Mel C (who has since had a baby daughter), and the presence of the children and their various nannies made the tour even more exhausting and complicated.
In the end, it was Geri who pulled the plug on the tour. It was alleged that she was jealous of how famous Victoria had become since the five girls had gone their separate ways.
Emma Bunton, ever the peacemaker, was upset and had wanted to continue with the tour — but all the rest of them had been happy to call it a day.
In any case, after the first few dates they didn’t socialise with each other after the shows, and even stayed in separate hotels.
When it was over, they went back to their respective careers: Victoria as a fashion designer, Mel B on her reality TV show and as a judge on the Australian X Factor, and Emma as a DJ for Heart FM.
Melanie C had her solo career — and a stint in a revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End.
Geri enjoyed some success as a solo artist, but now designs clothes for Next and has a brief role as a judge on the forthcoming series of The X Factor.
So why have they agreed to Viva Forever? As one source on the show says: ‘All they have to do is sit back and count the money.’
Musicals of this sort are huge commercial juggernauts. We Will Rock You, the musical based on the hits of Queen and written by Ben Elton has grossed more than £150 million. Mamma Mia! has a worldwide gross of £1.2 billion.
As Simon Fuller will have told them, they can hope to make far more than the £10 million each they netted from the comeback tour by lending their songs to the show.
It is estimated they could make  £3 million a year each for years to come if the show is a hit. Not bad for a pre-fabricated group, brought together via an advertisement in The Stage newspaper.
And even though the friendships were ephemeral, the music cheesy and the Girl Power philosophy not much more than a raucous slogan, the Spice Girls’ money-making juggernaut still thunders on.
'She's lost the spirit of the band': Victoria Beckham agrees to Spice Girls' Olympics reunion... for one FINAL performance only
By Sarah Fitzmaurice

Fans of the Spice Girls were thrilled to learn the five-strong band is set to perform at the Olympics this summer.
However Victoria Beckham has only agreed to the reunion on the provision the girls will never reform again, sources have said.

A source told MailOnline that Geri said: ‘After the Olympics I can't imagine even talking to her again, let alone being on a stage with her. Mel B. was right, she has lost the spirit of the band.’

The news that the fashion designer Victoria is keen to distance herself from the group that found her fame, may not come as a huge surprise.
The tensions between her and the rest of the Spice Girls were obvious at the Viva Forever launch, where she awkwardly posed for pictures looking apart from the group.
A spokesperson for Victoria told MailOnline: ‘The Spice Girls have received some amazing invitations to perform over the last few years, however personal family and professional reasons mean this has not been possible, the Olympics is one more amazing opportunity but no announcement has been made or confirmation given, so this is nothing more than speculation at this time.’

While there has been no official announcement about the girls taking part in the official Olympics closing ceremony a source told MailOnline the girls will be singing two numbers one of which will be their 1997 hit Spice Up Your Life, the other is thought to be Wannabe.

Mel C and Mel B voiced frustration at being left off the bill for the Diamond Jubilee concert last month and it appears the girls blame Victoria.

Geri told pals: ‘None of us can understand why she won't take advantage of these opportunities. Now is the time to be together again as a band and she and Mel B. can't be in the same room together.’
Speaking about meeting up at the Viva Forever press launch she added: ‘After the stunt she pulled at the Viva Forever press conference she said she's never preform with us again and then with David not being chosen for the team, she didn't even want to discuss it.’

The group hasn't sung together for four years since 2008 but if they do go ahead with the coveted gig they look set to join the likes of Take That, George Michael and The Who on stage.
Recently Beckham fuelled rumours she'd be happy to reunite for a one-off show on RTE radio's John Murray Show saying: 'I’m so respectful of my past and I love the other girls. We have some fantastic fans.
'Who knows, maybe some day we’ll do something else with the Spice Girls. I would love nothing more.
'I don’t know about a comeback tour but I loved being back with the girls. There was a lot of fun, we did so much together and we’ll see. If they’re up for something then I certainly am.'
She added: 'We are so proud to be English and we are very excited about the Olympics.'
A spokesperson for Geri was unavailable for comment earlier today.
